Why Questioning Is Not Rebellion, but Preparation.
When questions begin to surface, many people instinctively feel they are doing something wrong. Religious culture often teaches—sometimes subtly, sometimes directly—that doubt is dangerous, that questioning weakens faith, or that obedience means setting certain thoughts aside. As a result, people learn to mistrust their own mind just at the moment when it is trying to become honest.
But questioning is not rebellion against truth. It is rebellion against confusion.
Refusing to Live Divided
Real rebellion seeks independence from what is good and true. Questioning seeks clarity. It arises not from a desire to tear faith down, but from the refusal to live divided—to say one thing outwardly while thinking another inwardly. When questions are suppressed, faith may appear stable, but it quietly hollows out. When questions are faced, faith becomes vulnerable, but also real.
The Word itself invites this kind of engagement. It speaks in parables, images, and layered meanings precisely so that understanding can grow over time. If everything were meant to be grasped immediately and literally, there would be no need for depth. Questioning, then, is not a sign that someone is leaving faith behind, but that they are approaching it more closely—seeking to understand rather than merely repeat.
Searching for Meaning
Seen in this light, the period of questioning is not a failure of belief, but a form of preparation. It clears space for something more genuine to form. The teaching of the New Church gives language to this experience by suggesting that deeper meaning becomes visible only when surface explanations no longer satisfy. Questions do not disqualify a person from faith; they prepare the mind to receive truth in a way that is thoughtful, free, and alive.
